Interesting if you read the whole thing there are some great stereotypes explained and debunked.

This compares to another article the Age had already published another article that made out that all the generations did Why do we keep banging on about generation? on February 17, 2010

How fat has Marian Gold lead singer for Alphaville got – it is pretty clear Alphaville is not going to live forever – watch for the text ads that youtube overlays on the video. However apart from the issue that baby boomers are now getting fat there is that other question – do the various versions of this song indicate something about similarities as well as differences between generation x as against generation Y? – Is imitation flattery ?- Would gen Y even acknowledge they were copying? look below for three other versions of forever young - 2 are by singers who are so old they are baby boomers but these versions are the ones really remembered and popular with generation X : 1. the original by Alphaville and 2. Laura Branigan’s – Then perhaps the more recent version by the Australian band “Youth Group” – it is the one that some of the Australian generation Y would deny is not original – perhaps they would say it is the best version or the only version (they know of)- 3. the Youth Group version – which could be said to be an anthem for (or of) generation Y. - it became iconic -(ironic) because it was used in the U.S. Gen Y soapie “The OC”- but maybe Gen X ca lay some claim to it as it was originally popular during the early glam rock years of their rein but admittedly sung to gen x by a baby boomer.

Is imitation here a form of flattery? does gen Y give a nod in the direction of Gen X superior claim here? Or is the gen y version a full appropriation and a better version anyway? – Or do all the generations think they are forever young? - wadda – u- think ? – is one of the generations going to live forever?

First is a more svelte version of Marian Gold with a beautiful example of the X gen hair fashion tragedy thing going on on top of his head now not visible in the version above.

Another boomer Laura Branigan rehashes Alphaville. Still an X gen version - like Marian Gold, Laura became more rounded as the years passed and she also might now pine for the times when she might be forever young:

Gen Ys Youth group version – how do you think it compares ? It is pretty good I think and possibly still has resonance? Maybe things do not change that much
Big dreams turn into reality when she finally gets her break, courtesy of her best pal, who also steals her heart. Gen learns soon enough that life doesn’t always go as planned. Gen X is a fast-paced, witty, in-your-face novel for all who love chic stories and gut-busting humor.”

We know that Amazon is trying to sell but the story makes a strong link between gen xers and standup comedy as junkdrawer67 blog points out :

“Gen X is a 22-year old woman who lives with her friend Jared, a man-boy on whom she has a crush, but Jared is too busy banging anything with a hole and heartbeat and a big rack. Or so it seems. One night he tells Gen how he really feels about her, if one is to believe such a scoundrel. But hey, Han Solo was a scoundrel too and he turned out to be a stand-up guy?

Jared turns out to be a stand-up comedian, a pretty good one at that. And before Gen and Jared know it they are on their way California where Jared is going to be a big star and Gen is going to manage his career. But Gen is quickly maneuvered out of that roll by a savvy, ruthless agent who has here designs on Jared. After a brief stay at the home of an actor that Gen had an almost tryst with back in Philly, the city she and Jared started in, and where she meets a budding sweetheart of an actor named Scott, Gen finds herself living back at home with her parents — ugh! — and working a suck-ass McJob for a Temp Agency. Could things possibly get any worse?

Then answer is: yes they can. They always can. Every GenXer knows that.”

Sounds typical

The X generation pays its respects to the great Chan generation or dynasty of Asian Action Movies who know how to truly honour Generation X.
